Kamru Fort

Kamru Fort, also known as Kamru Fort, is an ancient historical fort located in the village of Kamru in the Sangla Valley of Kinnaur district, Himachal Pradesh, India. It is one of the prominent attractions in the region and holds cultural and historical significance. 

  • Location: Kamru Fort is situated in the village of Kamru, which is around 2 kilometers from Sangla, the main town in the Sangla Valley.
  • Historical Significance: The fort has a rich history and was the ancient capital of the Bushehar rulers. It dates back to the 15th century and has served as an important administrative and strategic center for the region.
  • Architecture: Kamru Fort is an excellent example of traditional Kinnauri architecture. It features wooden balconies, intricate carvings, and a multi-story tower, all made of local wood and stone. The tower, with its pyramid-shaped roof, is a distinct feature of the fort.
  • Entrance Gate: The entrance gate of the fort is elaborately decorated and is considered a fine example of Himachali craftsmanship. The gate has idols of Hindu deities and guardian gods, and it is considered sacred.
  • Kamaksha Temple: Within the fort complex, you'll find the Kamaksha Temple, dedicated to the goddess Kamaksha. The temple is a place of religious importance for the local people.
  • Kamru Village: The fort is situated in the midst of Kamru village, and you can explore the traditional Kinnauri houses and interact with the local community to learn about their way of life.
